Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS)

Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) is the national trade association representing Software & IT Enabled Services companies of Bangladesh formed in 1997 with 18 chartered members. Today the membership stands at 258. The association has been working with a vision of developing vibrant Software & IT Enabled Services sector in the country by using its huge potentials. In persuasion of this vision, BASIS has been working relentlessly to create IT awareness in the country through projecting the high importance of making the country more IT enabled for a better future of the nation. The association has also been working relentlessly for creating an enabling environment for the software & ITES industry of the country so that it can flourish by utilizing the huge market potentials- both at home and abroad.

Aims & Objectives

BASIS tries to pursue the following goals through its regular programs and activities:

	Domestic market development by creating awareness

	Helping the local software and ITES companies successfully to penetrate the international market

	Capacity building of the member firms

	Advocacy for business friendly government policies for the industry

BASIS has already gained modest success in attaining the abovementioned goals.

Partnership with Government

With regard to policy advocacy for the sector, BASIS regularly interacts with concerned agencies of the Government and other relevant stakeholders. It has been pursuing the policy makers for a more pro-active and responsive IT policy and its effective implementation. It is now advocating strongly for enforcement of ICT Policy, ICT Act 2006, relevant provisions of IPR Act 2000 for protecting software piracy. BASIS has also been working in close association with different government agencies for making their e-Governance initiatives successful with the help of private sector participation.

Domestic Market Development

For domestic market creation, every year BASIS organizes SOFTEXPO, the biggest software and ITES exposition in the country. During the recent years, SOFTEXPO has become the yearly mega event where a large number of software & IT companies project their products and services to potential IT users, both at corporate/organizational and individual level. Series of seminars and round tables organized at SOFTEXPO also provide ideal platform for members of the IT industry to interact and exchange views & ideas with policy makers and important stakeholders in the society.

During recent times, BASIS has taken sector wise focused initiatives to stimulate market demand for software and IT services. Importantly, it has been pursuing hard for increased IT spending by the government, potentially the biggest buyer of software and IT services in the country (BASIS has been demanding for quite some time for allocating 2% of ADP for IT spending as specified in current IT policy of the Government). During recent times, BASIS has also initiated moves for making government IT procurement policies & procedures more transparent, speedy and industry friendly.

Export Market Development

With regard to export market development, BASIS regularly takes initiatives for creating exposure for member companies to international markets with the help of different government and development agencies working in the export development area. Such initiatives include arrangement of participation at international IT fairs & marketing missions, business linkage programs for outsourcing, B2B trade platform etc.
