Country’s largest private sector expo “BASIS SOFTEXPO 2017” has been started in the capital city today with the slogan “Future in Motion”. Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), leading trade body of the sector, is hosting this largest IT and ITES showcase at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).
The event was officially launched in the morning of February 1, 2017 at Celebrity Hall at BICC. The inauguration programme was graced by the presence of Honorable Speaker of the National Parliament Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, PM as the Chief Guest. Planning Minister Mr. A H M Mustafa Kamal, MP and ICT State Minister Mr. Zunaid Ahmed Palak, MP were the Special Guests of the Programme. BASIS President Mr. Mustafa Jabbar presided over the programme while Ms. Sonia Bashir Kabir, Director of BASIS and Managing Director of Microsoft Bangladesh Limited, the Platinum Sponsor of BASIS SOFTEXPO 2017 and Mr. Syed Almas Kabir, Director of BASIS and Convener of BASIS SOFTEXPO 2017 were also present and delivered their speech in the programme.
BASIS Senior Vice President Mr. Russell T Ahmed, Vice President Mr. M Rashidul Hasan, Vice President Ms. Farhana A Rahman, Director of BASIS Mr. Uttam Kumar Paul, Mr. Mostafizur Rahman Sohel and Mr. Riyad S A Husain were also present among others.
National Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury urged the government to give incentive for the information technology sector to promote its way to achieve US$ 5 billion from IT-enabled service (ITES) export.
Speaker also said the government is working to establish a IT-business friendly environment as the sector can contribute more in the national economy.
Special Guest Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal, MP said the value of global software market is around US$ 3 trillion. “As apex trade body of ITES sector, BASIS has been working together with government to expand the footprints of local software firms in abroad. We prefer Bangladeshi software firms in most of the public procurement. Planning Ministry will support BASIS at all square to lead the local tech outlets.”
ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, MP said government is working together with private sector to create a business-friendly environment for the technology sector to achieve the milestone of US$ 1 bilion revenue from ITES export by 2018.
“Around 10 lakh people will be engaged in the sector by 2021. The technology sector will go forward in joint effort by public-private partnership. The government is ready to give incentive in the sector to promote the industry. Tax incentive has been given in the sector up to 2024. The young entrepreneurs will lead the way to achieve the US$ 5 billion export by 2021.
Regarding the ITES export BASIS President Mustafa Jabbar said there is a gap in the C-Form of Bangladesh bank which has no category for IT exports. “We have shortcomings in our reporting policy. Three government offices have three different pieces of information due to the absence of ‘ITES’ and ‘Outsourcing’ categories in the C-form of Bangladesh Bank. EPB follows these flawed data.”
BASIS President also said that BASIS will announce the US$ 1 billion export data consulting with all member companies by end of this year.
SoftExpo’s platinum sponsor Microsoft Bangladesh Managing Director and BASIS Director Sonia Bashir Kabir said that world’s largest software firm Microsoft stepped in Bangladesh as private limited company to associate in expansion of local software. A code learning session for children will be organized as a part of its initiative to introduce technology in education. Some 400 school students will get knowledge on programme coding, basics of software development.
She also mentioned that Microsoft has taken initiative with Access to Information Programme under Prime Minister’s Office to skill up women entrepreneurs of Union Digital Centres across the country as they can initiate own business related to technology.

Around hundred companies are taking part in the event this year. The expo arena are divided into four zones. 30+ seminar will be hosted where local and international experts will share knowledge in contemporary issues. The SoftExpo becomes an occasion to celebrate our own capacity in the Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES).
Since 2002, BASIS has been organizing the largest private sector showcase “BASIS SOFTEXPO” with a view to stimulate the growth of the industry through promotion & development, invention and research of IT and ITES products and services in Bangladesh. Consequently, ‘BASIS SOFTEXPO 2017’ has been started in the capital during 1-4 February, 2017. There were a number of seminars and tech sessions along with the showcase of IT & ITES related software and services to highlight the strength & capabilities of Bangladeshi companies in international arena.
This year’s exhibition is undoubtedly bigger and better than past events. More than hundred local and international companies, IT & ITES firms are showcasing their best ICT products and services during the expo this year. Over 500,000 visitors are expected to visit this year’s BASIS Softexpo 2017, which is a congregation of ICT companies, personalities, policy makers, industry leaders and other ICT stakeholders including national and international exhibitors, business leaders, students, print & media representatives and the like.
Main Attractions of the Event
Exhibition area is divided into four separate zones including Business Software Zone, ITES & BPO Zone, Mobile Innovation Zone and E-Commerce Zone. Local and foreign business match making session is being held in order to business expansion of IT ventures. A business lounge will be as an added value for the exhibitors. Besides, Leader’s Meet, Developer’s Conference, Tech Women Conference and other are few notable events this year. A separate Coding Programme event for children is an addition to this year’s BASIS Softexpo.
About 20 seminars are being held at Media Bazar and Windy Town Hall in BICC. These seminars cover different topics including Level Playing Field Cover for the local companies, digital education & e-learning, mobile application development, internet of things, access to finance, cloud computing, data networking security, export market promotion, developing innovation ecosystem, digital services delivery, IT market research, quality certification and so on. Honorable ministers, government officials, policy makers, journalists and experts in related field will take part in the discussion.
To address ICT related different issues, more than 10 tech sessions is being held at Green View Hall of the venue. API exchange, cross platform game development, encryption on cloud data, importance of UI/UX on mobile & gaming application, cyber security in national and international perspective, easy way of cloud server management, business development and client service augmentation through facilitating online payment, Artificial Intelligence, digital marketing & accounting BPO for business development: latent possibility related issues are taking part in the sessions.
International B2B Matchmaking session was organized aiming at enhancing the export of software and ITES services. This session was held on February 1, 2017 at 3:00 PM. At least 10 companies from Netherlands, Denmark and other EU countries are meeting with more than 100 Bangladeshi Software and ITES service companies. Participants decided to take necessary initiatives for their business development through this session. It is expected that Bangladeshi companies will get the opportunity to initiate business ventures with international companies.
Entrepreneurship and Career in IT
A separate session titled “Entrepreneurship and Career-in-IT” will be held at the closing date of the event. This session will be designed for the people interested to build career in ICT sector. By means of BASIS Student’s Forum, Prominent ICT organizations will partake in the session to network with potential human resources of the sector. Interested person can submit their CV for the posts of Programming, Design, Marketing, Business Development and Accounting. A separate box will be available to receive job seekers’ resume since the beginning of the exhibition. A special seminar will be organized for the students, job seekers and employees of the sector to provide career guideline where applicants will receive professional advice from the ICT experts participated in the fair.
