BASIS SoftExpo 2009 Inaugurated

BASIS SoftExpo 2009, the biggest ICT extravaganza of the country kicked off on Tuesday, 27 January 2009 upholding the theme “Linking People with Technology and Branding Bangladesh as the Country with Immense Possibilities”. Mr. A M A Muhith, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Finance, inaugurated the five-day event at the launching ceremony in the morning at the Harmony Hall, Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Center, Agargaon. Bangladesh Association of Software & Information Services (BASIS) organized the expo as its regular annual event.
Signing with GrameenPhone Limited

BASIS signed sponsorship agreement with Grameenphone Ltd. at Surma, Pan Pacific Sonargoan Hotel, on December 6, 2008. GrameenPhone signed as the Main Sponsor of the upcoming BASIS SOFTEXP0 2009.
Habibullah N Karim, President, BASIS and Ms. Rubaba Dowla, Director, Marketing, Grameenphone Ltd. signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.

Bangladesh Association of Software & Information Services (BASIS) signed sponsorship agreement at BASIS office on 24th of November, 2008 with the Media partners for BASIS SoftExpo, the annual mega IT exposition of the nation.
BASIS signed the agreement with ATN Bangla as Electronic TV Channel Partner, NEWAGE as Print Media Partner, Link3 Technologies as Official Internet Service Provider, Bdnews24.com as Online News Partner and Radio Today as Radio Partner of BASIS SoftExpo, the annual mega IT exposition of the nation.

Seminar on e-Commerce and Online Payments – Bottlenecks for Implementation was held on January 28, 2009. The Chief Guest of the session was Mr. Ziaul Hasan Siddiqui, Deputy Governor, Bangladesh Bank. Mr. A Munir Hasan from the Prime Minister’s Office was present as the key note speaker. The chief guest in his speech depicted the prospects of e-Commerce and Online Payments systems in Bangladesh. The speakers showed a prospective outline for potential market and possible next steps in this issue.

A seminar on Strategic Roadmap for HR Development for the Knowledge Industry was held on January 28, 2009. The chief Guest of the session was Prof. Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor, BRAC University while Dr. Atiur Rahman, Professor, Dhaka University was present as special Guest.
The Chief Guest emphasized ensuring quality of Information Technology learning at all levels of education and institutions to generate a skilled IT generation to meet up the huge need of trained professionals.
Meeting Mutual Expectations of Banks and Local Software and Services Providers

The session was attended by financial institution representatives, software industry leaders and financial experts which was held on Wednesday, 28 January 2009. Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Former Governor, Bangladesh Bank was present as a chief Guest. Among others Mr. Suhel Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairman, Bangladesh Bank Ltd., and Mr. Siddiqur Rahman Chowdhury, Chairman, Agrani Bnak Ltd., were present as special guest. Equity and Entrepreneurship Fund (EEF) of Bangladesh Bank and Venture Capital Investment were widely discussed in the seminar. Mr. Habibullah N Karim, President, BASIS was also present as a discussant.

A seminar on Funding Facilities for BASIS Members was held on January 28, 2009. In this session Mr. Murshid Kuli Khan, Deputy Governor, Bangladesh Bank was present as a Chief Guest. Mr. Rafiqul Islam Rowly, MD. CSL Software Ltd. and Mr. Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Managing Director – IDCOL were present as key note speakers. Mr. S.M. Kamal, Chairman, System Resources Ltd. was also present as discussant. In this seminar the discussants discussed on problems and opportunities of EEF and whether this fund could address the needs of the IT sector.

A seminar on Bangladeshi Call Centers and Other ITES Enterprises – Success Stories, Challenges and Possibilities was held on January 29, 2009. In this session speakers and discussants spoke on next generation wireless communication and application, business within telecommunication industry, software development opportunities in telecommunication. They also discussed on outsourcing business opportunities for telecom industry.

Seminar on Intellectual Property Rights in Bangladesh was held on January 30, 2009. The Chief Guest was Dr. Atiur Rahman, Prof. University of Dhaka in the session. Barrister Tanjeeb ul Alam was present as Keynote Speaker. Among others Mr. Habibullah N Karim, President, BASIS, Mr. Jon Danilowicz, US Embassy, Mr. A. Towhid, Former President, BASIS were present as discussants. The seminar addressed totally over the software copyright protection issues in the context of Bangladesh.

A seminar on Tax Issues for the Software and ITES Industry was held on January 29, 2009. In this session Mr. Abdul Mazid, Chairman, National Board of Revenue was present as a chief guest. Mrs. Parsa Begum, Member Income Tax Policy was present as a special guest. Nazim Farhan Chowdhury, Director, Graphics People was present as a key note speaker. Among others Mr. Nahid Ahmad, Secretary General, BASIS was present as a discussant. In this seminar discussants discussed on the legal facts on the subject and the major hurdles that software and ITES enterprises are facing in taking advantage of the incentives given by the Government. By the end of the seminar, it was expected that the confusions and misconceptions will be cleared and software and ITES enterprises will be able to take advantage of the intended incentives.
Closing Ceremony

The closing ceremony of BASIS SoftExpo 2009 was held on 31st January 2009. Mr. Syed Ashraful Alam, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of LGRD was present as Chief Guest while Mr. Syed Modasser Ali, Hon’ble Adviser to the Prime Minister, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present as the Special Guest.
Mr. Feroz Ahmed, Secretary Commerce and Mr. Md. Nazmul Huda Khan, ndc, Secretary, Science and ICT attended the occasion as the Guest of Honour. Mr. Habibullah N Karim, President, BASIS Presided the occasion.
